Greenwich, CT – Custom Residential Steel work

R Wood Construction was brought on board to execute both the structural and ornamental steel work for a private residence in Greenwich, Connecticut. This project was a showcase of architectural ambition and demanded an expert balance of engineering precision and craftsmanship. From the outset, the design presented a notable challenge: how to support a series of expansive, open-concept living spaces with minimal visual interruption — all while maintaining the architectural vision of clean lines and understated elegance.

Our team was tasked with solving a complex structural problem. The home’s design called for long spans and cantilevered sections that required structural steel solutions capable of carrying significant loads without the use of visible supports that would interfere with the space’s open feel. R Wood Construction collaborated closely with the project’s architect and engineer, providing early input and value-engineered alternatives that respected the integrity of the design while streamlining constructability.

We fabricated and installed a custom steel framework that became the backbone of the home’s structure — carefully hidden within walls, ceilings, and floors to preserve the clean architectural lines. Beyond the structural scope, we also created a series of ornamental elements, including custom stair components, modern handrails, and bespoke metal trim pieces. Each piece was tailored to integrate seamlessly into the home’s refined palette, contributing both function and subtle visual detail.

What made this project particularly rewarding was the level of coordination and problem-solving it required. With every structural member and ornamental detail, we had to anticipate not only the architectural intent, but also how each piece would interact with materials like glass, wood, and stone. Our work didn’t just support the structure — it enhanced it.
